Clifton Street Temperance L.O.L. 969 The warrant of LOL 969 was granted on the 16th August 1938. The Lodge was to meet in Belfast Orange Hall, Clifton Street under No. 2 District Lodge where it still remains to date. The first meeting was held on Monday 19th September 1938 when the Officers and committee members were elected. The outbreak of World War II saw members joining HM Forces and in May 1941, the church from which the Lodge derived its name was destroyed by enemy action. Sadly, in more recent years, the church has suffered considerable damage at the hands of sectarian vandals. On the front of our banner is a painting of the church, on the reverse side is a painting of the Good Samaritan which continually reminds us that we should offer help to all who are in need. We are delighted to say that 1998 marked the 60th year of LOL 969 being part of No. 2 District and, as on 12th July 1867, we continue to be at the forefront within it. Despite being one of the District's smallest Lodges, over the years we have played an active role at District level: the late W. Bro. John Osman MM was District Secretary for a number of years assisted by William Glover who retired from this Office recently. 2 of our members have held the Office of District Master consecutively: the late Thomas McQuillan and Thomas Wright, who has the honour of leading the Belfast County Colour Party today. We would like to wish all our brethren and in particular, our District Master, William Milliken and the Officers of No 2 District, a 'joyful and peaceful' day and let us all honour the colours we wear, ever remembering our qualifications as Orangemen, our duty to the Faith we embrace, following the example of Jesus Christ our Saviour and Lord and like the painting on our banner, let us also be Good Samaritans. |
