Whitewell Temperance L.O.L. 533

In 1952 several members of LOL 455 decided to form a new Lodge. One of the main reasons for this was that Greencastle Orange Hall had only a small number of Lodges sitting there.

One of the first considerations was the title for the proposed new Lodge. So, since the Orange Hall was situated on the Whitewell Road. it was considered appropriate that it be known as WHITEWELL TEMPERANCE.

Greencastle Orange Hall Management Committee then gave us a Lodge room and we were inaugurated on the 18th November 1952.

On the evening of our inauguration, 2 brethren requested transfers to our Lodge. The names of 7 candidates were also received and accepted. Subsequently, on 20th January 1953, W. Pro. Reginald Price, the Lodge's first candidate was initiated into the Orange Institution.

In 1953 it was decided to purchase a banner with a depiction of 'The buying of water at the times of distress' on the front and on the reverse a memorial to Orange brethren who lost their lives in the Princess Victoria tragedy. This contained a painting of the Princess Victoria with pictures of the late Sir Waiter Smiles and the late Major Maynard Sinclair. Unfortunately, the new banner was not ready for the first parade to Finaghy on 13th July 1953 and so an old banner was obtained and the name covered with appropriate material.

The new banner, which cost £45, was unfurled on Saturday 29th May 1954 by the late Rt. Hen. G.B. Hanna QC, MP, with Edenderry Flute Band being engaged for the day at a cost of £2-10-0, and all these years later we still have the original banner. On the 18th January 1955, because of poor attendances at its meetings, the Lodge changed its meeting place to Belfast Orange Hall, Clifton Street.

The Lodge has a tradition that it parades past the front of HMP Belfast, Crumlin Road on the morning of each Twelfth Parade. The reason for this is that in its very early days, the membership was mainly made up of Prison staff, indeed before our troubled times, the Governor of the Prison always took the salute as the members passed by.
