Prince Albert Temperance L.O.L. 1892 In November 1888 a number of brethren from York L.O.L. 145 met at 54 Carlisle Street off the Old Lodge Road in Belfast with the object of forming a new Orange Lodge in the city. This being the second lodge formed from the ranks of 145, the other also staying with No. 3 District being Prince of Orange L.O.L. 1922.At the inaugural meeting on 27th May 1889 visiting brethren included Brothers McCormick, Thompson and Gibson the respective Worshipful Master, Deputy Master and Chaplain of No. 3 District Lodge. Toasts during the festive board aften~vards were to Queen Victoria and the Prince and Princess of Wales. In 1927 a young brother James Will is was entered on the roll of the lodge and "wee Jimmy" was to become the lodges serving member until his death as Honorary Worshipful Master in our Centenary Year 1989. A service spanning 62 years having been Master as well in 1936. The presentation of the Orange Pageant across the halls in the province was the brainchild of 1892 and was a shining example of what can be achieved by brethren with commitment of institution in their hearts. Members of the lodge were to the fore throughout the past thirty years of civil strife around this beloved province of Ulster and joined with their brethren and sister in Airdrie, Scotland to set up a family holiday forum for the many wives and children who had suffered during the troubles. The late Brother Johnny McQuade MP for North Belfast was a noted past master as were other later brethren such as Billy Spence, Billy McKay, Frank Curry, Sam Steen, Bertie Spencer and Hayes among others. In 1989 the lodge celebrated in fine style its 1OOth year within the order. Perhaps a century of ups and downs but still a leading lodge within the orange family having the conviction and assertion to live up to the memory of those who formed, sustained and bequeathed this lodge to us on the pure principles of Orangeism as asserted, fought for and won at the battle field of the Diamond, the native place of our glorious institution. |
