Tyndale L.O.L. 1869 This year (1999) Tyndale celebrates the 50th anniversary of its formation. In September 1949, a number of Brethren from the Duncairn area decided to form a Lodge to perpetuate the memory of the late Brother William Grant, who had devoted a lifetime to serving the people of that area. He, along with Lord Carson and John Andrews founded the Unionist Labour Association in 1914. A warrant was granted from No. 2 District and on 15th November 1949, Brother William Grant Memorial Temperance Lodge came into being. Over the following years, the Lodge grew from strength to strength and started to draw members from all over Belfast. In 1964 it was decided to rename the Lodge: various names were suggested and the decision was made to change the Lodge's title to 'Tyndale' after William Tyndale, the first translator of the Holy Bible into English, especially since 1964 was the 470th anniversary of his birth. The Bible should be an Orangeman's guide through life, and to have the Scriptures in our own language is Tyndale's greatest memorial. Like all other Lodges, our Lodge has strong family ties and nothing better depicts this than our present Worshipful Master, Brother Jonathon Rainey and his father W Brother Robert Rainey who just left District Master's Office this year. Also among our ranks is another Past District Master, W Bro. Dean Ferris, who will always keep functions full of song. Our senior Brethren are both approaching 50 years in Tyndale, W Bro. Raymond Kirkland PM who is the Lodge Treasurer and W Bro. Brian Hume PM. In this, our 50th year, we would offer to all Brethren the motto given by our first Worshipful Master, W Bro. Thomas Sharkey on the night of his installation, 'Attempt great things, expect great things'. |
