Victoria Temperance L.O.L. 1541 The lodge was first raised in the townland of Carrickmaddyroe, Saintfield, County Down, by Bro. William Muckle, its first Master, on 22 October 1823, and was one of 36 lodges comprising No. II District Saintfield, where they were last recorded as being active in 1885. They wore dark maroon sashes in their early days, and had by all accounts a very considerable membership. The last recorded Master of the Lodge while domiciled in Saintfield was Bro. John Lynas. The warrant, having become dormant after this date, was reissued to a Bro. John Johnston, when the lodge re-formed as part of No. 5 District Sandy Row, and they transferred to the newly formed No. 10 District in Ballynafeigh. It is not known for how long they sat in Sandy Row Orange Hall; what is known is that they joined lodge 985 in the newly built hall at Ballynafeigh prior to the month of June 1888. One suspects that one reason for the transfer of meeting place to Ballynafeigh at this stage may have been the possibility that at least part of their membership still consisted of Saintfield residents and that the move was a matter of convenience. The number of complaints raised today regarding the distance to Edcnderry marched by the Belfast Orangemen each Twelfth of July bring a smile to the face when viewed against the minute book for the year 1888 which records that lodges 1541 and 985 paraded on the Twelfth of July morning from Ballynafeigh Orange Hall to the 'Linen Hall' (which stood on the present City Hall site), where they joined the Belfast County parade and marched from there to Lambeg and back. It is further recorded that they were also accompanied by members of L.O.L. 985's junior lodge. Yet the same minute book for August of the same year contains not one single complaint regarding the distance covered. It makes one think and wonder! The first District Master of No. 10 District, W. Bro. Robert Gibson, was amember of L,O.L. 1541, and the writer has reason to believe that Bro, Gibson was, previous to this date, District Master of No. 5 District -- quite a distinction. Records from September 1896 show L.O.L. 1541 to have 90 members on their roll book, and as a lodge they continued to flourish. The records of the 1930s show many of their members to be employees of Ormo bakery and local men. As a lodge they are one of the very few who still celebrate the failure of the Gunpowder Plot with an annual thanksgiving service held on the first Sunday of November each year in Rugby Avenue Congregational Church, and event they have observed for a long period of years. They were also one of the last lodges in the city to make use of horse-drawn brakes on the Twelfth of July. From records available, it appears that L.O.L. 1541 is one of the very few lodges left in Ireland who still bear the title under which they were originally raised, and while they are a much smaller lodge than they were in former days, they are nevertheless still active. Among the prominent members of this lodge it would be remiss not to record the sterling service given to the lodge down through the years by the following brethren. The late W. Bro. William Orr senior and the late W. Bro. James McCaffrey were prominent lecturers in both Orange and Black Orders. Bro. Orr also served in later years as hall keeper. His son, W. Bro. W. Orr, served as past Chairmanand Vice-President of the City of Belfast Orange Widows Fund and had twenty five years service on the hall management committee, ten of these as chairman. In addition, he is a past chairman of the Congregational Church Union of Ireland. William and his father before him have given over one hundred years service to the Orange Institution between them -- a very proud record. The late Robert Crawford was a past District Master and tireless worker on behalf of the lodge, District and hall management committee. Other brothers associated with this lodge and deserving of mention are Bros. Richard Storey and Dan Coyles, and last but by no means least, the late Bro. Daniel Johnston, whose footsteps were so ably followed by his son Rro. Hugo Johnston. |
