William Bell Memorial L.O.L. 1187 The warrant of LOL 969 was granted on the 16th August 1938. The Lodge Workers of the well-known Belfast Brush Manufacturers Robert J. Hall formed LOL 1187 on 3rd July 1920, with the warrant being issued under the name of Bro. John H.Gault Memorial. Over the years the Lodge has had several changes to its name, each change with a storyof its own. In the 1930s, one of the founder members, the late Bro. Alexander Blair died and so the Lodge became The Alexander Blair Memorial LOL. During this time, the Lodge formed a Junior Lodge: No 84, which surpassed all hopes the founders could have had. This Junior Lodge was the first Junior Lodge from Ireland to pa'ade in Scotland and with over 300 members, it must have been a sight to behold. At the outbreak of war over half the Junior Lodge joined up, many making the supreme sacrifice. Among the members of that time was Bro. Robert J. Hayes PM who, until his death a few years ago, was known as the father of the Lodge. In the year 1953, the Larne - Stranraer steamer: Princess Victoria sank in the Irish Sea so, at the instigation of the late Bro. William Bell, we put a picture of the ship on our banner as a memorial to all who drowned with her, most notably, Brothers Major Maynard Sinclair and Sir Waiter Smiles. When Bro. William Bell, a founder member, died in 1955, it was the wish of the Lodge that the name be changed since only few of the members knew the late Pro. Alexander As our banner depicts that ship sailing into the waters of destiny; so we in the Lodge look forward to the millennium when we will go forward together sailing into uncharted waters. |
